Homeopathic Treatment of Diabetes

Homeopathic Treatment of Diabetes
by Julia M. Green, M.D.
Success in the homeopathic treatment of any disease depends on following the principles laid down in the philosophy of Hahnemann and expounded by the wisest of his followers as they interpreted these principles in terms which present day prescribers can understand.
These principles are clear, practicable and satisfying. Man is a triune being, spiritual, mental, physical. All diseases, or disorders, partake of these three realms. Therefore, we treat the man, not his organs by themselves. We strive to learn the patient's reactions to the disorder present, reactions in the spiritual, mental and physical spheres. We become acquainted with him and try to separate the abnormal or morbid in his case from that which is normal.
This means the gathering of symptoms, the arrangement of them for study into the three classes mentioned, making the spiritual the most important, the mental next and the physical last, also making the symptoms predicated of the patient as a whole far more important than those predicated of one part or only a few parts.
It means suiting a remedy to the patient, not to one of his parts, whether this remedy is well known for the disease in question or not. It means preparing the remedy to act on the plane of this particular patient's disorder. It means watching the results of a prescription and judging therefrom whether or not a curative process is developing. It means choosing a better remedy or following along with the one first chosen and its complementary remedies.
The homeopathic physician, therefore, has no special treatment for diabetes. The diabetic patient is treated just as every other patient is treated. Like every other case, much depends on how far tissue change has taken place at the beginning of treatment, that is whether this has advanced far enough to render the patient incurable. Homeopathy can cure any curable case of diabetes and it has done wonderful things with diabetics who have been considered incurable by other methods. A so-called incurable may have to return for further treatment at intervals if sugar returns after freedom and good health. Advanced cases may never cease treatment altogether but may live as long as other people and die of something else. Or such a patient may be palliated wonderfully on the way to death.
In diabetics we are dealing with borderland cases, with what is called an ultimate in organic disorder. Homeopathy, used for chronic ills from early life, very rarely develops an ultimate. Its power in prevention is marvelous. But, mind you, I am talking about principles and their practice, not about the weaknesses of human nature and human endeavor in physicians as well as in patients.
You will want to know whether the strictly homeopathic physician uses insulin. I cannot answer for all of them. I know that some will not allow it, will take it away at the beginning of homeopathic treatment, regarding it as an element of interference. Since insulin is not really a drug, I think some permit its use. Of one thing I am sure. A patient accustomed to insulin in large doses over a long period is enabled to reduce that dosage soon after beginning treatment and may cut it down one-half or three-quarters or cut it out altogether. The pancreas, if not too far gone, comes back wonderfully toward normal functioning.
Here are a few cases to illustrate what I have been trying to say.
CASE I.  G. W., girl of five years
Began treatment October, 1937. Diabetes known to be present for two years; on strict diet. Urine tested for sugar by mother every two days, medium amount at first, a trace by Jan., 1938, then disappearing altogether until March when medium amount again for a few days and sugar free by the 31st to remain so.
Blood sugar test Jan. 13, 1938, 129; Aug. 4, 1938, 74; March 11, 1939, 113.
She was on a general diet after the first few months. This child had little endurance at first, could not keep going with other children, could not stay in kindergarten; looked sallow, weak, had a heart murmur. She had a strong tendency to prolonged bronchitis with high fever, then recuperation. She was irritable, unstable, extremely nervous, could not keep still, biting fingers.
Her father had one tubercular lesion in lung before she was born. Taking this inheritance into consideration along with the symptoms, treatment was started with Tuberculinum 10M., and continued with Lycopodium in a series of potencies.
She grew to be quite vigorous though still developing high fever on slight provocation. I have not seen her since December, 1939, but hear she is very well.
CASE II. B.W., three years, sister of the former patient
Began treatment at the same time. Has had diabetes all her life; urine sugar free on strict diet but returns if she has any starch or sugar. By January, 1938, on a much more general diet, urine was sugar free or nearly so. By the next September had been sugar free for many weeks and remained so. Blood sugar, Jan. 13, 1938, 122; Aug. 4, 1938, 78.
This child was given Tuberculinum at first also, but later had Pulsatilla and then Natrum mur., as her symptoms ran to catarrhal troubles with ear inflammation, and to digestive disturbances.
She has always been stronger and more even tempered than her sister.
CASE III. Fragment of a case reported by Dr. C.A. Dixon, Akron, Ohio.Mrs. R., 48 years.
Oct. 10, 1940. Phos. 2c. Nov. 28, much better. Jan. 2, 1941, Phos. 2c. Jan. 23, worse. Phos. 1M. March 13, sugar free.
As no symptoms are given upon which to base the prescription, this case is mentioned simply to show that the remedy alone made the patient sugar free in less than six months and on three doses only.
CASE IV. Reported by Dr. Harvey Farrington of Chicago. Roland I.P., age 62, tall, dark complexion.
Degeneration of macula lutea, both eyes, since five years; vision dim, worse in a bright light. Process seemed to be checked by Nux vomica. Mother, 82, and son, 35, have the same trouble. Younger son died of diabetes at fourteen years.
Diabetes started apparently late in 1936. Lost twenty pounds during the next year and became quite weak. Dec. 31, 1938, sugar in urine 8.5%. Phos. ac. 3X.
May 24, 1939. Weakness with perspiration. Tenderness of buttocks; hurts to sit. Spells of melancholy. Phos. ac. 1M.
June 17. Much better, more energy. Pain in buttocks better. Nov 4. Phos. ac. CM. Jan. 8, 1940. Phos. ac. CM. April 6. Phos. ac. CM. Sept. 8. Phos. ac. MM.
Sept. 15. Much stronger, says last medicine acted like magic.
Nov. 9. Sugar 0.75%, gaining weight and energy. March 1, 1941. Better in every way, sugar free if he avoids starches and foods containing cane sugar; allowed honey, pure maple or corn syrup. This case never took insulin.
CASE V. Also reported by Dr. Farrington.Theo. J., age 50.
Not well for several months. Had arthritis in 1924 "cured" by baths at Burton Harbor, Michigan.
June 15, 1940. Sugar formed in urine ten weeks ago, taken insulin daily since. Amount of sugar in urine now 3.6%. Lost twelve pounds in the last month. Aversion to sweets. Pain in lumbar region 3 p.m. Syzygium 12X. three times a day for seven days. Insulin discontinued.
Aug. 2. Sugar free. Pain in back gone several weeks ago.
Aug. 23. Feeling fine. Has gained weight. Sept. 6. Sugar free. Losing weight again. Hunger. Diarrhea from milk or sour foods. Sulph. 1M.
Nov. 8. Gained weight; seems perfectly well. March 24, 1941. Still perfectly well.
CASE VI. Another case of my own.
L.E.M., medium height, stocky, rather pasty, sallow, very puffy about the eyes. In U.S. Naval Academy with rigid tests and O.K.
HISTORY: 1906: Trace of sugar in urine. 1908: Typhoid; never regained weight. 1911: Appendectomy; appendix found shrivelled; followed by abscess on abdominal wall. 1912: Some sugar but gradually less. 1914: Strangulated intestine, emergency operation. Sugar in quantity after this. One time of coma. 1916: Retired on account of diabetes. 1921: Gradual loss of weight. Neuralgia legs and feet until hard to walk. Began insulin; on it all the time since May, 1923.

B.P. below 100 at one time, now 130. Sugar in urine was 5 or 6%, now none for a year. Blood sugar was 35.00% two or three years ago, now none. Taking 32 units of insulin daily.
Left antrum has been infected for three years. Now slight discharge which is offensive. Skin extremely dry. Slight wounds or scratches very slow to heal. Ulcers over tibia and between toes do not heal. Endurance low, must lie down frequently. Teeth poor, better since started insulin. Likes dry weather, mild climate. Worse damp weather and drafts. Craves open air. Calm naturally, phlegmatic, rather slow. Irritable with diabetes.
July 14. Cut insulin one-half. Lyc. 10M. July 20. Decidedly better and cut out insulin. July 29. Stools regular (had been constipated many years). Diarrhea the 24th. Aug. 10. Sugar 1 1/8% a week ago.
Sept. 9. More energy; color better. Urinalysis ten days ago: quantity normal; sp. gr. 1035, sugar 2 1/2%.
Oct. 24. More nervous, irritable. Lyc. 10M. Nov. 25. No better, very irritable. Sugar 3 3/4%. Lyc. 50M. Dec. 9. Better in general. Sugar 4%, sp. gr. 34.

Feb. 19. No better. Went to Naval Dispensary for examination. Advised return to insulin and did so. Told trouble with retina. Psor. 10M.
March 25. Gaining flesh steadily. Able to reduce quantity of insulin over and over and get a reaction, even when eating more freely than for years.
April 7. Urine and blood sugar free since early February. April 26. Has gained ten pounds. Looks more sallow. Eyes no better. Psor. 10M.
May 24. Insulin 18 units (one year ago 36 units). Vision better slowly. July 7. Vision worse. Ankles swelling. Psor. 50M.
Sept. 28. Able to go touring, driving long distances, eating as other people do in hotels and restaurants; careful to avoid most sweets.
Dec. 18. Been better. Now weight less. Psor. 50M.
Feb 16, 1927. Toe which has had ulcer since treatment began entirely healed. Subsequent history is a repetition. Weight, strength, energy, remain good. Does all kinds of mechanical labor. Diet only slightly restricted. Insulin produces reaction occasionally and must be reduced. Vision is permanently affected so cannot read fine print. All tests for sugar negative.
The change from an invalid to a vigorous active man began promptly and has continued all these years; it would have to be seen to be realized. Remedies have been: Psorinum for a basic remedy; Lycopodium and Sulphur for lesser chronic ills and Kali bi. for acute troubles, mostly catarrhal.

The homeopathic treatment for the diabetic is the same as for any other disorder and the results are very frequently soul satisfying.

Premenstrual Conditions and Homeopathic Remedy Indications

Premenstrual Conditions and Homeopathic Remedy Indications

- BOUKO LEVY M., Homeopathic and Drainage Repertory,Through the eyes of the homeopathic practitioner, the premenstrual syndrome is the perfect image of the evolution of a woman through her fertile life.
During the second part of the menstrual cycle, a general congestion, of the head, breasts, ovaries, uterus, lower limbs, tonsils, liver, kidney, skin, etc., predominates.
The intensity and  recurrence of premenstrual syndrome, in a woman, is directly proportional to the degree of sycotic reactive mode she possesses.
The tuberculinic reactive mode has particularly violent symptoms with extreme nervous weakness.

The Role of Psychology in Homeopathyby Livia Tiba, Classical Homeopath

Homeopathic medicine was first discovered in the early 1800's by a German doctor and chemist, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). His homeopathic healing methods were inspired by the so-called law of similars: Similia similibus curantur [like cures like]. Homeopathy is a holistic approach to disease, based on the Gestalt theory, and asserts that no disease is local without affecting the whole body. It addresses the cause of the disease and strengthens the entire body to eradicate the disease by itself.
Homeopathy is based on stable laws and principles. Over time many non-classical points of view developed and also different ways of approaching. Many homeopaths developed their personal way of treatment, embedding new ideas as psychoanalysis and dream interpretation. There are new schools of thought which insist on a psychological causation behind every physical ailment. The classical Homeopathy of Hahnemann, based on Gestalt, does not automatically assume this psychosomatic dynamic, although it does recognize such aetiology in particular cases, when it is evident  (e.g. fainting caused by a fright, or ulcers from anxiety). It also emphasizes the mental/emotional symptomatology in correlation with the totality of existing symptoms.
This study will discuss three aspects:
1. Why is there such a lack of familiarity and acceptance of Homeopathy?
The controversy of Homeopathy continues even today, 200 years after its discovery.
2. The classical Gestalt approach of HomeopathyHahnemann based this healing art on two strong principles: the Law of similars (“Similia similibus curantur”) and the Gestalt theory that the body is more than the sum of its parts.
3. The modern non-classical approach of Homeopathy: There are new schools of thought embedding new ideas as psychoanalysis and dream interpretation and insist on a psychological causation behind every physical ailment.
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the place of psychoanalysis in homeopathic case taking. It attempted to demonstrate that a proper balance should be found in using this concept in Homeopathy.

1. Why is there such a lack of familiarity and acceptance of Homeopathy?
Homeopathic medicine was first discovered in the early 1800's by a German doctor and chemist, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). After studying and practicing medicine he became dissatisfied with the conventional treatments and looked for better ways to help his patients. Hahnemann dedicated his whole life in discovering and perfecting this true healing art and he wrote and published six editions of ‘The Organon of Medicine’ exposing the laws and principles that form the base of Homeopathy.
His homeopathic healing methods were inspired by the so-called law of similars: Similia similibus curantur [like cures like] which was first postulated by Hippocrates, the father of the Western Medicine: “Through the like disease is produced and through the application of the like it is cured.”  This means that a remedy that produces symptoms in a healthy person will cure those same symptoms when manifested by a person in a diseased state.
Homeopathy is a holistic approach to disease, based on the Gestalt theory, and asserts that no disease is local without affecting the whole body. It addresses the cause of the disease and strengthens the entire body to eradicate the disease by itself. Homeopathy strongly believes that all disease’s symptoms are natural body healing signs, where the vital force struggles to reestablish the homeostasis, the health state, in the body. The body can heal itself from minor or mild diseases where our natural vital force is strong enough to deal with that disease. In strong powerful diseases where the vital force is overwhelmed by the disease, it needs help or stimulation in dealing with the disease. Homeopathy does this by providing the vital force with the smallest necessary degree of ‘information’ or ‘guiding’ translated by remedial symptoms similarity.
Homeopathic medicines are made from plants, minerals and animal products in successive dilutions and succussions. A point is reached when the dilution passes what is referred in chemistry as the “Avogadro’s number” and not even a molecule from the original substance can be found in the remedy. Beyond science explanation, the remedies are even more deep-acting treating at a deeper level.  Through the homeopathic method of preparation, by trituration and succussion, only the substance’s energy is taken and worked on through ‘potentization’ and used to treat the disease.
Clinical trials are very difficult to be conducted because of the individualization of the homeopathic treatment. A specific case cannot be duplicated because the same chronic disease usually needs a different remedy in a different person.
The controversy of Homeopathy continues today because the mystery behind its mechanism of action eludes our understanding. But as at one point, we believed that the Earth is flat, that we cannot fly or have distant communication by talking, in time all these were beaten by discoveries. The same is now in regard of what exactly is happening at the subatomic level, what are the mechanisms in which energy can be transferred at this level. We know about transmission by particles and waves , but many unknown events are produced at this level.
Kent, one of the foremost homeopaths, said “While Homeopathy itself is a perfect science, its truth is only partially known. The truth itself relates to the divine and the knowledge relates to the man. It will require a long time before physicians become genuine masters in this truth.”

2. The classical Gestalt approach of Homeopathy
Hahnemann, as the great physicians Hippocrates and Paracelsus, was well aware of the importance of the constitution and causation in the art of healing. The great Paracelsus asked healers to return to the roots of things if they wish to cure: “No knowledge is perfect unless it includes an understanding of the origin, that is the beginning; and as all man’s diseases originate in his constitution, it is necessary that his constitution should be known if we wish to know his diseases.”
Hahnemann underlined the importance of constitutional factors, disease state and causation. On the basis of these he introduced in aphorism 6 of the “Organon of Medicine” the concept of complete Gestalt of the disease. The Gestalt is investigated through the objective signs, coincidental events and subjective symptoms. This Gestalt makes up the essence of the totality of the symptoms and must be investigated through the patient, those around him and by the observations of the homeopath. The mental/emotional symptoms and the general symptoms that refer to the whole body, together with the most peculiar characteristic symptoms are the most important symptoms in finding the remedy.
We know that every physical disharmony is accompanied by a change in the mental/emotional state and vice-versa. Any strong mental/emotional state, especially if prolonged is capable of causing physical illness and any physical disease has the potential of producing a change in the mental/emotional state, in both acute and chronic illness. As a disease affects the whole body, physically and metal/emotionally, the full picture of the patient will be needed to match the homeopathicity of a well chosen remedy. The more complete the picture the better the prescription will be. Either exclusion or over consideration of some sort of symptoms as physical, mental/emotional, constitutional or causative in the detriment of other important symptoms will not reflect the true Gestalt of the disease and will not conduct to a well chosen remedy.

3. The modern non-classical approach of Homeopathy
There are new schools of thought embedding new ideas as psychoanalysis, delusions and dream interpretation and insist on a psychological causation behind every physical ailment.
There are homeopathic techniques that reduce the Gestalt to few specific approaches as psychoanalysis, Gestalt awareness techniques, and paradoxical intention strategy without considering the totality of the symptoms.
Another approach is the Jungian psychology where a patient is characterized only based on archetypes which are inherent organs of psyche, a primal form and have a very important role in processes of thinking, living and attitude of all human beings. They come from the collective unconscious and directly manifest themselves in the mind of man, in religion, in myths, in the thinking and behavior of man, but also in the nature and in the world generally.
Using these techniques, the remedy is viewed almost exclusively through its delusional perspective, the core delusion and dream interpretation. There is a tendency in modern Homoeopathy to reduce the totality of symptoms to one core delusion, or to a small essential part or vital sensation, that is suppose to be more important than the whole. As Dr. David Little said “this is a hit or miss method and when someone is wrong he is often very wrong”, of course, in the detriment of the patient.
Conclusion
Homeopathy is a holistic approach to disease and asserts that no disease is local without affecting the whole body, based on the Gestalt theory. Every approach or technique that uses a trimming, shortcut or over emphasis of some symptoms in the detriment of other important symptoms, failing to reflect the essential nature of the Gestalt of the disease, will come up with a poor prescription. The more complete the picture, the more likely the chosen remedy will be homeopathic, and therefore curative.
Homeopathy however is not the same as psychoanalysis because although it needs to find the mental /emotional dynamic in case taking and psychological insights may be revealed, this information together with a multitude of other particular and general symptoms, the essential Gestalt of the disease, is used to find the homeopathic remedy.

Asthma treatment in homeopathy

Asthma, causes, symptoms and homeopathy treatment., Lifestyle & diet for asthma patients for natural cure of asthma and asthmatic bronchitis.
The word ‘asthma‘ is derived from the Greek meaning ‘ panting’ or ‘labored breathing’. Asthma is a condition characterized by a paroxysmal wheezing respiration dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing), mainly expiratory.

According to the etiology, bronchial asthma is divided in the following groups:
1. Allergic (extrinsic/ atopic) Asthma – This type of asthma usually starts in childhood and is often preceded by eczema. But most of the young adults (<35 yrs) developing asthma also fall in this category. Genetic factors also play a significant role i this. In this type of asthma the allergen leads to production of excessive (IgE) immunoglobulins.
 2. Infective or Intrinsic Asthma – This is not hereditary or allergic, but may be caused by, or at least associated with upper respiratory tract or bronchial infection which is usually viral.
3. Emotional Asthma – Psychological factors (like anxiety, emotional stress etc) are often considered to be the sole cause of some asthmatic attacks, but it is still not certain whether it can be the sole cause or is only a precipitating factor.
4. Occupational asthma – This can occur in certain industries in which there is exposure to metallic dusts (esp. platinum salts), biological detergents, toluene diisocyanate, polyurethane, flour and dust from grains etc.
What ever may be the cause, it ultimately leads to paroxysms of bronchial obstruction produced by widespread bronchial spasm accentuated by plugging of the bronchi with excessive mucus.

Recurrent episode of paroxysmal dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing)
The breathing is laboured, with a wheezing sound, mainly on expiration.
Asthma attacks often occur in the early hours of morning (when there is no immediate precipitating cause). During the attack patients often prefers to sit then lie down.

Diagnosis can usually be made clinically by a competent doctor. Allergen sensitivity tests, X-ray, spirometry, sputum and blood tests etc may be of use in finding the cause and severity of the condition.

  • Bronchitis
  • Cardiac asthma
  • Renal asthma
  • Isolated attacks of non-paroxysmal dyspnoea.
Asthma – COMPLICATIONS
Apart from chronicity, usually no complications.
Pneumothorax, emphysema, or areas of consolidation or pulmonary collapse may occur in very advanced cases.
General Approach:-
 – Homeopathy is a system of medicine which tries to ‘cure’ this disease, instead of trying to provide symptomatic relief. While dealing with a case of asthma, a homeopath not only records the symptoms of the disease but also studies the medical history, family history, physical and psychological characteristics of a person. This helps to find the cause, the precipitating factors, and the hereditary tendency etc. Of special interest to a homeopath is the history of suppression of skin disease. Homeopaths believe that when there is a tendency or predisposition for a disease – it first manifests on the less vital organs, towards the periphery (like skin). If this manifestation is suppressed than the disease shifts inwards, towards the more vital organs (like lungs, heart, brain etc).
The fact that in children asthma is often preceded by eczema is observed by the allopaths also. This fact is written in all their textbooks of medicine. They say that children often ‘move-out’ of eczema and ‘move-into’ asthma. But they are unable to make a correlation. Homeopaths believe that the suppression of eczema with topical preparations, does not cure the disease/sensitivity of the person, it merely drives it inwards.
Now after ascertaining the symptoms and the cause, the homeopath tries to find a medicine which matches the symptoms as well as the general characteristics of the person. The medicine so selected is administered to the patient.
It is often (not necessarily) observed by homeopaths that when a right medicine is given, the asthma disappears but the old eczema or skin rash (if it was there originally) reappears for some time, before finally disappearing itself. This reappearance of old symptoms is seen as a reversal of disease process and is considered a very good prognostic sign by homeopaths.
MEDICINES – There are lots of medicines in homeopathy for asthma symptoms and it is not possible to list them all here. Some of the common medicines are ars-alb, ipecac, lachesis, pulsatilla, spongia, sulphur, ignatia, antim-tart, hepar-sulph, nat-sulph, tuberculinum etc. The selection of medicine varies from patient to patient.
#Ipecac [Ip]
This remedy is a close homoeopathic simile to asthma, especially to the spasmodic variety where the symptoms are great weight and anxiety about the chest; sudden wheezing, dyspnoea, threatening suffocation, aggravated by motion; the cough causes gagging and vomiting. The cough is constant, the chest seems full of phlegm, yet none is expectorated, and the extremities are covered with cold perspiration. Lobelia is a remedy which one usually classifies with Ipecac. It has the great oppression of the chest and a weak sensation in the chest which seems to come from the epigastrium, where there is a feeling of a lump; there is nausea, profuse salivation; the attack is preceded by a pricking sensation through the whole system. It is most useful in bronchial and septic asthmas. The breathing is exceedingly difficult, and is relieved by moving about. A pain extending around the forehead from one temple to other and a pain in the back at the last dorsal vertebra are also useful indications. Arsenicum is quite similar to Ipecac in asthma, and attacks coming on after midnight lead to the use of this remedy. With Ipecac the expiration is especially difficult; vomiting when it occurs is apt to relieve the attack.
#Arsenicum [Ars]
As stated above, Arsenicum has some similarity to Ipecac, but the time of attacks is just after midnight. The patient has a great deal of anguish and restlessness; he cannot lie down for fear of suffocation. There is anxiety and general sweat, and if the patient drowses off he is awakened with burning pain and soreness in the chest. It is especially the remedy if the disease be chronic and the dyspnoea habitual and dry and the patient aged. Apis has a suffocative feeling, and the patient does not see how he can get another breath, and the Bromine patient breathes very deeply as it seems as if he could not get air enough into his lungs, while under Grindelia robusta the patient on falling asleep ceases to breathe and awakes with a start. Grindelia has been found clinically to benefit humid asthmas and acute catarrhal asthmas, and Halbert states that 5 or 10 drops of the tincture every hour during the paroxysmal state will greatly palliate. Probably in higher potencies it would act curatively for its symptomatology represents the typical paroxysmal features of this disease. It has a peculiar symptom, a fear of going to sleep on account of loss of breath which awakens him. Viscum album is also clinically recommended. It has weakness of the respiratory and stertorous breathing. The asthma of Arsenicum is accompanied by great debility and burning in the chest, and it follows Ipecac well, and is especially useful in anaemic persons. Baehr and Jousset place this remedy at the head of our list for asthma.
#Nux vomica [Nux.v]
Nux vomica is a useful remedy when the asthmatic attacks are brought on by gastric disturbances; simple spasmodic asthmas; there is some relief by belching, the patient must loosen the clothing. It must also be thought of in those who drink much coffee or liquor. Irritable bilious temperaments also correspond to the drug. Zingiber is also a remedy for asthma of gastric origin , and the attacks come on toward morning; the patient must sit up; no anxiety. A good symptom calling for Nux is a constricted felling at the lower part of the chest. Where there is much abdominal irritation present with much flatulence, Lycopodium and Carbo vegetabilis should be thought of. Carbo vegetabilis also corresponds to the asthma of the aged who are much debilitated; they are greatly oppressed for breath and are relived by belching wind.
#Kali bichromicum [Kali.bi]
The potashes produce asthmatic condition, and under Kali bichromicum we find the attacks coming on about three or four o’clock in the morning, compelling the patient to sit up to breath; he sits up and bends forward which relives somewhat, as does also the expectoration of stringy yellow mucus, which is characteristic of the remedy. It is similar to Arsenicum except for this feature of tenacious mucus. Kali carbonicum has asthma worse towards morning, with a feeling as if there were no air in the chest. Kali phosphoricum has been successfully used in asthma, especially in the nervous variety.
#Natrum sulphuricum [Nat.s]
This remedy has established a record in curing asthma. Its general symptoms are worse on change to damp weather. It was one of Grauvogl’s hydrogenoid remedies. Its symptoms are moist asthma, with a great deal of rattling in the chest. The symptom of looseness of the bowels after each attack has been repeatedly verified; in one case the patient was worse from aerated waters and alcohol. If symptoms indicating a sycotic taint be present,it will be all the more strongly indicated. The attacks generally come on about 4 to 5 o’clock in the morning with cough and raising of glairy slime; expectoration greenish and copious. The asthma of hay fever finds one of its remedies in Natrum sulphuricum, and another in Sabadilla, especially if much sneezing be present. Another symptom of Natrum sulphuricum which is characteristic is that the patient must sit up and hold the chest with the hands during the attack. Hypericum. Dr.T.F.Allen relates a severe case of asthma, having the symptoms, “dryness of the throat always worse in foggy weather,” cured by Hypericum.
#Antimonium tartaricum [Ant.t]
is a remedy used largely in some form by the allopathic school in asthma, and it is homoeopathic to certain cases. The great keynote for the remedy is the presence of fine mucous rales throughout the chest, finer and smaller rales than are found under Ipecac. With this remedy the chest seems full of phlegm, with inability to expectorate it. There is great dyspnoea, the patient must sit up, and there are suffocative attacks coming on as in the potash preparation ( and this contains potash ) about three o’clock in the morning. Like Ipecac, too, there is great difficulty in the expiratory effort. Antimonium tartaricum is especially adapted to the extremes of life, suiting the asthmatic attacks of the aged and the dyspnoea of the young children when due to pulmonary affections. The sensation that the patient cannot get air enough is characteristic of the remedy. Blatta orientalis has obtained a good clinical record in acute and chronic asthmas, and is well worthy a trail in obstinate cases; precise indications are wanting.
#Moschus [Mosch]
Intense anxiety, intense fear and a smothering sensation. It suits those of a sensitive, highly organized, nervous temperament; neurotic types when increased anxiety and nervousness predominate. Ambra grisea. Dread of people, great desire to be alone. Silphium lancinatum. Dr.A.F.Schulz, for Fort Wayne,Indiana, a very careful prescriber, uses this remedy very successfully in moist asthma with expectoration of large quantities of stringy mucus; rapidly exhausting. It is light colored or yellow. Hale states that horses are cured of the heaves by eating the leaves of Silphium. The 2x trituration is recommended.
Asthma – CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT
Bronchodilators, anti-lukotrine, anti-allergic drugs, and ICS (inhaled corticosteroids) are commonly used to provide symptomatic relief.

Avoid the allergen you are sensitive to.
Do regular light exercise like brisk walking or jogging. Heavy exercise can precipitate an attack of asthma, so always do mild exercise without putting too much strain on your body.
Learn breathing exercises to improve your lung capacity. Of especial use is ‘pranayam’, a yoga exercise.
Learn some stress relieving exercises, meditation, or yoga to minimize the psychological factors related to disease.
Advice healthy, nourishing and well balanced diet.
