Warts: Treating Them with Homeopathy

Warts appear in all shapes and sizes. Caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), they are highly contagious and while they can appear in anyone of any age, they are more likely to bother children and teenagers.

Nearly all warts are harmless but once they pop up on conspicuous places such as the face or hands, most people will do almost anything to get rid of them.

Conventional treatments offer to freeze, burn, inject, shave, electrocute, poison, or dig the poor wart out but with varying degrees of success. Some can cause scarring while with others, the wart may regrow. For patient sufferers, just waiting may also bring success as 65% of warts disappear all by themselves with time.

For those who would like to hurry them along though, homoeopathy can help – and in more ways than one.

Thinking More Deeply about Warts

Warts are often seen as nothing more than a minor nuisance – to remove the wart is to remove the problem. But is this completely true? No, say homoeopaths.

Their presence on top of the skin warns of a deeper weakness or susceptibility that allows them to continue and flourish. While removing the wart creates a blemish-free skin, it does nothing to correct this underlying weakness – the person is still vulnerable to future health problems.

A more holistic approach is needed and this is where homoeopathy excels. By treating the wart as just one of the person’s health problems and prescribing a homeopathic remedy accordingly, widespread improvements are achieved and the underlying weakness repaired.

Common Wart Remedies

When using homoeopathy for warts, good results are achieved when the remedy corresponds to the characteristics of the person as well as the shape and appearance of the wart. [1]

With that in mind, three remedies are prescribed more often than any other – Antimonium crudum (Ant-c.), Nitricum acidum (Nit-ac.) and Thuja occidentalis (Thuj.). Read on for the descriptions of these three and other common wart remedies.

Antimonium crudum (Ant-c.): Hard, smooth warts that often appear in groups. Irritability and a thickly coated white tongue also suggest the need for this remedy. The person may also overeat and have various digestive complaints.

Calcarea carbonica (Calc.): Round, hard, solitary warts. Often useful for endophytic warts that have a horny wall surrounding a central depression. Indicated in people with clammy hands and feet who prefer routine and the familiar rather than change and the unknown.

Causticum (Caust.): Old, large warts on the face (especially the nose), under the fingernails, or warts on fingertips that bleed easily suggest the need for this remedy. The warts also tend to be hard, inflamed, and painful and sit on whitish-yellow, dirty looking skin. People who benefit from this remedy tend fear that something awful will happen and feel intensely sympathetic about the hardship of others.

Cinnabaris (Cinnb.): A common remedy for molluscum contagiosum that has a reddish periphery and senile keratosis (thick, crusty and scaly skin growths of the aged). People needing this remedy may also be prone to sinusitis.

Dulcamara (Dulc.): Flat warts located on backs of hands and face and soft brownish to black seborrheic warts found on the back. Indicated in people with rheumatic complaints that are worse in cold, damp weather or humidity.

Ferrum picricum (Ferr-pic.): Small pointed warts appearing in large groups. Also useful in some cases of flat or plane warts with irregular borders that grow on the face, neck, wrists, hands and knees. Men may have prostatic enlargement.

Graphites (Graph.): Especially in periungual warts or corn-like warts on palms or soles of feet that may be tinged with yellow. Indicated in those who have trouble making a decision and who are prone to keloid scarring.

Natrum muriaticum (Nat-m): An important remedy for warts on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet. Indicated in those who are closed, reserved and sensitive.

Nitricum acidum (Nit-ac.): This remedy is indicated in treating large, fissured or gold-yellow warts that itch and sting or bleed upon washing.. This remedy is also indicated for people who are anxious about health and worry about cancer. Often useful for endophytic warts that have a horny wall surrounding a central depression or the more common plantar wart.

Ruta graveolens (Ruta): This is a leading remedy for plantar warts, especially on the palms of the hand. People needing Ruta are prone to injuries of tendons and periosteum of bone.

Thuja occidentalis (Thuj.): The most common remedy for various kinds of warts. If no other remedy is obviously indicated, consider Thuja. Particularly indicated in isolated, jagged warts that smell or bleed easily or mosaic warts on the sole of the foot. Commonly needed for anogenital warts or butcher’s warts. Indicated in those prone to numerous growths or tumors and who worry too much about what people think of them.

Finally, a Warning About Warts

Some skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinomas look similar to warts so it is important to get a firm diagnosis if there is any doubt.

If genital warts are present it is also important for women to have a PAP smear to check that pre-cancerous changes have not taken place on the cervix.

In one study,  90% of patients with various types of warts saw their warts disappear within six months when remedies that matched their individualising symptoms were used (Gupta, Bhardwaj, and Manchanda, 1991). Erectile dysfunction is a persistent or recurrent inability to attain, or maintain until completion of sexual activity, an adequate penile erection. This replaces the earlier term “Impotence”. Erectile dysfunction can seriously mar the quality of life of the patients. A range of drugs like Alcohol and medications like Antihistamines, Antidepressants and Antihypertensions can cause erectile dysfunction.

The factors which contribute for organic erectile dysfunction include:Chronic Illness: Atherosclerosis, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Renal Failure, Hepatic Failure, Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Pathology, Peyronie’s Disease, Depression, Anxiety, Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Hypogonadism, Hyperprolactinaemia.

Surgery: Radical Prostatectomy, Resection of the rectum, Major Pelvic Surgery.
Trauma: Neurological, Spinal Cord Injury, Pelvic Injury.

Majority of sexual dysfunctions are primarily psychogenic in origin. Anxiety concerning sexual performance and fear of sexual failure are the most salient immediate causes of erectile difficulties. A history of sexual abuse, guilt about sexuality, and early homosexual experiences are among the more common factors that underline sexual dysfunction. Psychological causes include depression like major depressive episode or dysthymia, stress, anger, interpsychic problems, performance anxiety, low self-esteem. A man may have a good erection with masturbation, but not when sexually active with his regular partner.

In Allopathy “Sildenafil Citrate” is the new oral therapy for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It usually acts within an hour of administration. The drug enables erections to occur in response to but not in the absence of sexual stimulation. The manufacturer recommends caution if Sidenafil is used in patients with bleeding disorders or peptic ulcers or eye disorders or with poor cardiac status. Blood pressure is reduced transiently by Sildenafil 100 mg. However, larger blood pressure reductions may be observed when Sildenafil is given with nitrates.

Sildenafil under the brand name “VIAGRA” is being sold in America and now even in Indian market Sildenafil is available under different brand names. It is very unfortunate that media has given very much importance to this drug by highlighting on the advantages by ignoring its serious side effects especially in those who are suffering from cardiovascular diseases. It is surprising to know that during April 1998 to February 2000, 522 people died from cardiovascular problems due to the side effects of Sildenafil. A majority of people who died were below 65 years of age with no cardiac risk factors (diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or smoking). Secondly, Nitrates alongwith Sildenafil can cause serious cardiovascular events with fatal outcome.

The Nitrate drugs are:
Isosorbide Dinitrate
Isosorbide-5-Mononitrate
Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate
Glyceryl Trinitrate
Amyl Nitrate or Nitrite (Inhaled Forms)

Those patients are using the above Nitrates drugs should not use Sildenafil since it may cause potential life threatening hypotension, dizziness, faintness or even a heart attack or stroke.

Therefore, Sildenafil (“Viagra” or its other versions) is not the right choice for all men. In addition to this drug, many people take the help of Vaccum Constriction Device, Penile Injection Therapy, Intraurethral Therapy, Surgery. All of these treatments have different complications and side effects.

Homoeopathic Treatment:
Agnus Castus:
The penis is small and flaccid, so relaxed that voluptuous fancies excite no erection. The testicles are cold, swollen, hard and painful. Impotence with gleet. During micturition and at stool there is much secretion of prostatic fluid. Pollutions from irritable weakness with prostatorrhoea. Gonorrhoea with suppressed sexual desire. Diminution of sexual power.

Argentum Nitricum:
Erection fails when coition is attempted. Want of desire. Penis shrivelled. Coition painful, sensitive at orifice. Painful tension during erection. Testicle drawn high up. Psychological impotency. Apprehensive impotency before coition.

Caladium Seguinum:
Sexual organs relaxed and swelled. Glans flabby from masturbation. Painful erection without sexual desire, alternating with sexual desire with relaxed penis. Impotence with mental depression. Nocturnal emission without dream. Imperfect erection and premature ejaculation of semen. Excitement does not erect penis. Feeling of coldness in penis.

China Officinalis:
Impotency with excited, lascivious fancy. Swelling of the testes and spermatic cord. Quick discharge of semen during intercourse followed by profound neurasthenia.

Conium Maculatum:
Impotence, insufficient erections, and absence of erections. Want of energy in coition. Erections imperfect, and of too short duration. Easy emission of semen, even without firm erections. Dejection, after coition. Sometimes emission at mere presence of women.

Lycopodium Clavatum:
Impotence of long standing. Weakness or total absence of erections. Penis small, cold, relaxed. Emission too speedy or too tardy during coition. Falling asleep during coition. Lassitude, after coition or pollutions. Flow of prostatic fluid, without an erection. Abhorrence of coition.

Nux Vomica:
Excitement easy. Strong sexual desire with painful erection. Increased sexual desire with frequent erections and pollution in the morning. Pollution with flaccidity of penis fllowed by coldness and weakness in lower extremities. Involuntary seminal emission. Nightly emissions with lascivious dreams. Impotency due to masturbation and sexual excess. Flaccidity of penis during coition.

Phosphoricum Acidum:
A feeling of heaviness in glans especially when urinating. Absence of sexual desire. Neurasthenia after sexual intercourse. Weakness of sexual organs with onanism and little sexual desire. Frequent and very debilitating pollutions. Onanism. Discharge of semen while straining at stool.

Phosphorus:Impotency after excessive excitement and onanism. Involuntary emission. Feeble and too speedy emission during coition. Very strong sexual desire, with constanct wish for coition.

Selenium:
Impotence; with lascivious ideas. Pollutions, with flaccidity of penis. Discharge of semen, drop by drop, during sleep. Flow of prostatic fluid during evacuation and at other times. Thin and scentless semen. During coition, feeble erection, too prompt emission, and long-continued voluptuous thrill. Priapism, glans drawn up.

Staphisagria:
Always has sexual thought. Frequent pollutions, even during a siesta. Face sunken and melancholic due to bad effect of onanism and too frequent nocturnal emission. Organs relaxed with backache and weakness of the lower extremities. Seminal emissions followed by great chagrin and mortification Dyspnoea develops after coition. Secretion of prostatic fluid during evacuation.

Medorrhinum:
Impotency after suppression of gonorrhoea. Emission during sleep. Semen watery, causing no stiffness of the linen. Pain, burning along urethra when semen discharges.

Sabal Serrulata:
Discharge of prostatic fluid. Pain in back much aggravates after coitus. Drawing pains in spermatic cords; shrunk testes. Penis shrunk and cold with urinary troubles. Hard erection, slight twisting chordee as if stretched from the root. Organs feel cold. Coitus painful at the time of emission. Sexual neurotics.

Turnera Aphrodisiaca (Damiana):
An excellent remedy for impotency. Give 5-10 drops a dose thrice daily. Sexual debility from nervous prostration. Chronic prostatic discharge.

Sulphur:
Too quick discharge of semen during coition. Erection fails when coition is attempted. Incomplete rection during coition. Impotence with mental depression, relaxed penis, with sexual desire and excitement. Testes relaxed and hanging down. Watery semen.

Calcarea Carbonica:
Weakness of the genital functions, and absence of sexual desire. Erections of too short continuance, and emission of semen too slow and too feeble during coition.

Arnica Montana:
Impotency due to fall or blow. Impotence from excess or abuse.

Nuphar Luteum:
Excessive depression of the male generative system. Entire absence of erections and desire; voluptuous ideas which fill imagination do not cause erections. Penis retracted, scrotum relaxed. Complete absence of erections; inability to effect coitus.

Moschus Moschiferus: Impotency associated with diabetes.

Kali Bromatum: Impotency with melancholy, loss of memory; nervous prostration; epilepsy.

Yohimbinum: It is a powerful stimulant of the genital function in males. Sexual neurasthenia, with impotence.

Homeopathic Remedies for Impotence

Impotence is the inability to maintain an erection long enough to engage in normal sexual intercourse. Many factors can contribute, including emotional issues, dietary factors, use of alcohol or drugs, and level of physical fitness. Homeopathic remedies sometimes help with temporary difficulties. If the problem is constant or recurrent, a doctor should be consulted to check for physical, hormonal, or nervous system problems. A constitutional remedy and the guidance of an experienced practitioner may help bring balance to a person’s system, both emotionally and physically.

Agnus castus: This remedy may be helpful if problems with impotence develop after a man has led a life of intense and frequent sexual activity for many years. A cold sensation felt in the genitals is a strong indication for Agnus castus. People who need this remedy are often very anxious about their health and loss of abilities, and may have problems with memory and concentration.

Argentum nitricum: This remedy may be helpful if a man’s erection fails when sexual intercourse is attempted, especially if thinking about the problem makes it worse. People who need this remedy are often nervous and imaginative. A person who needs Argentum nitricum is usually warm-blooded, with cravings for both sweets and salt.

Caladium: This remedy may be helpful to a man whose genitals are completely limp, despite having sexual interest. Nocturnal emissions can occur without an erection, even if dreams are not sex-related. A person who needs this remedy often craves tobacco.

Causticum: This remedy may be indicated if physical pleasure during sex has diminished and sexual urges are reduced. The person feels tired and weak, and may experience memory loss, with a compulsive need to check things (to see that doors are locked, etc.) Prostate problems may be associated with impotence, and urine may be lost when the person coughs or sneezes.

Lycopodium: People who need this remedy may have problems with erections because of worry, and can also be troubled by memory loss. They often lack self-confidence (though some may overcompensate by acting egotistically). People who need this remedy often have digestive problems with gas and bloating, and an energy slump in the late afternoon and evening.

Selenium metallicum: This remedy is often helpful to men who have diminished sexual ability, especially if the problem starts after a fever or exhausting illness. The person feels weak and exhausted, but interest is usually still present. Unusual hair-loss (body hair or eyebrows) can also suggest a need for Selenium.

Staphysagria: Gentle-natured, quiet men with deep emotions may respond to this remedy. Problems with impotence often occur from embarrassment or shyness. People who need this remedy often have a history of emotional suppression and very sensitive feelings.

Homeopathy Dosage Directions

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Lycopodium Clavatum

Homeopathic remedies are prescribed on the principle that 'like cures like', in a tiny dilution - so the indications below are what a healthy person would feel if taking Lycopodium Clavatum. If your symptoms fit within the symptoms below, then Lycopodium Clavatum would be a good bet. The following are the strongest indications of Lycopodium Clavatum for its use in homeopathy. This drug is inert until the spores are crushed. Its wonderful medicinal properties are only disclosed by trituration and succussion. In nearly all cases where Lycopodium Clavatum is the remedy, some evidence of urinary or digestive disturbance will be found. Corresponds to Grauvogle’s carbo-nitrogenoid constitution, the non-eliminative lithemic. Lycopodium is adapted more especially to ailments gradually developing, functional power weakening, with failures of the digestive powers, where the function of the liver is seriously disturbed. Atony. malnutrition. Mild temperaments of lymphatic constitutions, with catarrhal tendencies; older persons, where the skin shows yellowish spots, earthy complexion, uric acid diathesis, etc.; also precocious, weakly children.
